Game of Thrones has never shied away from killing its main characters. But the death of Daenerys was still a massive shock to the fanbase. What compounds the emotional devastation is her death by the hands of her lover and most trusted friend, Jon Snow. So why did Jon Snow kill Daenerys, a woman he loved so much and someone who he’d die for?
Daenerys Targaryen, had just captured King’s Landing and won the coveted Iron Throne that she’d been attempting to capture for years. However, the method in which her victory was achieved was brutal and did not sit well with everyone. Tyrion was the first to come to the conclusion that Daenerys was unfit to rule and on the path to becoming a “Mad Queen” and when he confronted her about the destruction and mass slaughter, Tyrion was imprisoned and slated for execution. Tyrion manages to convince Jon, when he visits him in his cell, that Daenerys was not going to stop killing, even after she held the throne.
Jon was equally appalled at the carnage and when Jon confronted Daenerys, who showed no remorse and was going to continue down this path, he vowed that he'd love her always, and then stabbed her in the heart while hugging her. He made the decision to spare the people of Westeros from another ‘Mad Queen”.
